But this racism, and in its lesser form as microaggressions , has always been there in one form or another, especially in the dating world. I first wrote about my experiences of fetishisation on Tinder as a black mixed-race person just over year ago.
Since then, I have removed myself from the app, received many unsolicited Facebook requests from men who had ‘read my article and just wanted to say hey’, and, quite happily, found myself back together with an ex-boyfriend. Though these observational results do not assess mortality outcomes and adjust for few comorbidities, they signal potential biologic vulnerability for a large proportion of people worldwide living with obesity. In Norway and Sweden, cases among Somalis are seven- to ten times expected based on population [ 9 ]. Ethnic differences in economic status, underlying health conditions, density of residence, and household crowding all contribute to the unequal impact of COVID The mortality gap between the most and least deprived areas is greater for COVID than that normally observed for all-cause mortality, highlighting the importance of socioeconomic status [ 1 ].

One of the projects will establish a unique partnership between national healthcare organisations to specifically address the prevalence of COVID amongst BAME healthcare workers – who have been significantly overrepresented amongst the deaths from the virus. The mixed-method project will bring together existing datasets to calculate the risk of COVID to all BAME healthcare workers and follow a group of these healthcare workers over the next 12 months to assess their physical and mental health – as well as engage directly with a smaller group of workers to gather qualitative data.
Our study is the first to be conducted on a large scale, investigating why BAME healthcare workers could be at greater risk.
